Sivanath Sastri College is an outcome of the great educational movement of the late nineteenth century, led by the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj. This movement, in the shape of an Under-Graduate college under the University of Calcutta aimed at the liberation of the human mind.

Ananda   Mohan Bose (1847-1904), the founder of City School (1879) and City College (1881), planned to establish an educational institution for imparting quality education where a ‘dedicated’ group of teachers would control and manage the academic, administrative affairs as well as value orientation without outside interference. Ultimately, he entrusted a Board of Trustees of the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj with the management of the institution. The college was placed (January 1905) under a society registered under Act XXI of 1860. Later, the Managing Council was re-named as the Brahmo Samaj Education Society (BSES) which holds administrative control over the present City Group of Colleges. The motto of BSES is to “Promote the cause of education---comprehending the training of the mind, heart and body, founded on theistic basis conducive to the good of man and the glory of God.”

A Commerce Department was started in the City College in1939. The South Calcutta Branch was opened in 1946 during the days of the great Calcutta Killing with the main objective of providing education at an institution in a safe zone for the students of South Calcutta. The South Calcutta Branch was started in November 1946 at the premises of the South Suburban Branch School at 110, Lansdowne Road. The South Calcutta Branch was not closed down even after the situation improved,  popular demand made the authorities  continue the college in South Calcutta. In July 1952 The South Calcutta Branch had to be shifted to premises No.50, Mahim Halder Street, Kalighat. Finally, in 1954 The South Calcutta Branch was accommodated in the new building of the college at Gariahat Road. The foundation stone of the South Calcutta building was laid on January 6th ,1954 by the late Harendra Coomer Mukherjee, the then Governor of West Bengal. It may be stated here that Dr. Mukherjee was a member of the City College Teaching Staff for some years. The opening ceremony of the South Calcutta Building was performed on January 6, 1955. In 1955 a morning section for women was started in the same building. This was at a time when there was a pressing demand for educational institutions for women, particularly in Southern part of Calcutta where there was an increasing population since the partition of the country. Women’s education formed one of the chief aims of Sadharan Brahmo Samaj since its foundation. The Sadharon Brahmo Samaj was the first to  uphold the ancient dictum ‘Kanyapyebvam palaniya siksniyati yatnatah’. A women’s section was the manifestation of the original Brahmo spirit of social service.

With effect from June 1, 1961 the City College Commerce Department branched off into five separate Colleges, namely (1) City College of Commerce and Business Administration, (2) Umesh Chandra College both located at 13, Surya Sen Street Kolkata and (3) Sivanath Sastri College (4) Heramba Chandra College and (5) Prafulla Chandra College, located at South Calcutta building at 23/49, Gariahat Road, Kolkata. The Morning Section for Women of the South Calcutta Commerce Department emerged as Sivanath Sastri College, affiliated to the University of Calcutta and of course closely tied to the City Group of Colleges in heritage bonds. The fledging institution thrived under the able leadership of its first principal, the late A.K.Sen who provided a mother’s care and father’s protectiveness to the growing institution.

The college was named after Pandit Sivanath Sastri (1847-1919) – a renowned scholar and accomplished writer, a dedicated teacher, an unrelenting advocate of freedom, political, social and religious as well as education for women, and above all a great human being.

This womens' college lives up to the ideals of the great  philanthropist & strives ahead towards a great future.
