Sivanath Sastri College is situated near Gol Park, South Calcutta, at 23/49, Gariahat Road, Kolkata-700 029. Prof. Shyamalendu Majumdar is the Teacher-in Charge; Prof. Seema Banerjee is the Vice Principal of this college, while Dr. Sriparna Bose and Prof. Sipra Roy are working as the Bursar and Superintendent respectively.

Sivanath Sastri College has been awarded a B+ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

As an affiliated college under the University of Calcutta it is primarily sustained by Grant-in-aid received from the Government. Majority of the students hail from urban and suburban areas. The admission process is strictly based on merit. The performance of the students in the University Exams is highly satisfactory and has helped the college to acquire a very good reputation in and around Kolkata. It has obtained a special status in the domain of academics relating to the Commerce Department in particular. The College also offers different Honours courses under B.A. & B.Sc. stream. All the Departments have experienced teachers. Some of the teachers in the commerce department are also associated with the corporate world. A few of the teachers are associated with Post-Graduate departments of different Universities of West Bengal. The teachers belonging to the Departments of Education and Political Science also provide academic guidance to different institutions belonging to rural areas. The faculty members regularly participate in Seminars and Workshops in order to upgrade themselves with the recent developments in their respective disciplines. The College periodically holds workshops for raising the awareness of the students relating to important issues which touches upon their lives; from the ‘AIDS-Awareness Programme’ to a workshop on ‘Drug Abuse’. The College has recently undertaken an international project with Prayasam under the auspices of UNICEF on 'Child Right'.

The College takes pride of being one of those modern academic institutions which not only puts emphasis on the academic aspect but also takes greatest care to equip the students with improved communication skills by arranging debates and extempore speeches, so that they may readily face the challenges of the professional world. Sivanath Sastri College projects itself a dynamic, contemporary college. It combines its dynamism with respect for the Brahmo-Tradition of which it is a product. Its distinctiveness lies in this balanced fusion.

The college offers courses in English, Bengali, History, Political Science, Education, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Economics, Geography and Commerce. The college is particularly well known for its Commerce Department. Professionals from the world of Finance, Accountancy, law and Company Secretaryship are parts of the faculty. This obviously establishes a lively channel between academics and career. Commerce co-exists with Humanities and provides a platform for interaction between very diverse streams. Commerce with its emphasis on creative applicability and Humanities with their critical aptitude combined to give students a multidimensional perspective. The Humanities streams in this college do not remain within a cocoon of isolated academics. The ideal of ‘Enlightenment’ is not relinquished but neither is it divorced from vocational relevance. Sivanath Sastri College is one of the first institutions in Calcutta to offer courses in Commerce exclusively for girls. The college is not a part of a flamboyant Women’s Liberation Movement, but women’s issues are specifically highlighted and explored here in ways that can help the girls to acquire a quiet, non-aggressive, mature confidence. We seek to maintain a flexible disciplinary frame work.

Girls from various cross-sections of society come to study here- those who are privileged and those who are not so privileged. There are some students who came from very deprived backgrounds. This intermingling is encouraged by the institution. Affluence is not allowed to be a subtle player in the shaping of the climate of the college. It is truly democratic in that sense, and not elitist.

The college performs particularly well in University examinations. The profile of the college is on the ascent and has the potential to attract and mould some of the best talents in the city.
